Tuchel Seeks Bellingham's Passion Provided England's Star Sets Aside Egotism at the Door.

A single omission proved sufficient. A second one and it would have started to look vindictive from Thomas Tuchel, who is much too clever not to know that winning the World Cup demands help from the talented midfielder, although it is also Bellingham's responsibility to adapt to the tactical structures and player rankings necessary with the national team now that he is back in the manager's welcoming fold.

The manager seeks his aggressive mentality, his fire, but it is about using it in the right way. Skill is important but England understand from past setbacks that there is a cost when celebrity dominates. Still, a statement has been delivered.

Bellingham had plenty to reflect on after being left out of last month’s squad. He watched England book their place at the tournament without him. He watched Morgan Rogers shine as a counterpressing No 10. He listened as the coach talk about valuing the group’s energy and ethics. Naturally, Bellingham has reacted in champion style, finding the back of the net for Real Madrid against Barcelona and Juventus. Inclusion was a must; leaving him out again would have made his squad place hanging by a thread.

The expectation is that Tuchel will have a Bellingham directed towards pressuring the opposition instead of teammates. After all, from a tactical perspective, there is no advantage to picking a fight with one of the best players in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time not playing has demonstrated that representing the national team is a precious, uncertain thing. Tuchel, for his part, can now offer support for the youngster after demonstrating that he is not afraid to make big calls.

“There is no problem with him, and no concern with the character,” the German stated. “Bellingham displays a competitive streak. It takes a certain edge to reach the heights that he reached. We all need to support him and create a atmosphere which he can use that intensity in matches and for the objectives we are striving for as a team.”

The star dominated much of the focus at the team news conference for the upcoming meaningless matches against one opponent and Albania. Any other news? Indeed, how about Phil Foden? This is a further gifted No 10 who needs support and direction. Foden has been absent for England since March and has found it hard to perform well recently but Tuchel was impressed by the player after how he played in his club's victory against the German side this week.

The question, though, is how to use the various creators at available. Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze have earned their places and there will be a strong case to pick Cole Palmer once he overcomes a persistent groin problem. Would taking five No 10s to the tournament be an overkill? The previous manager failed to discover the optimal mix at Euro 2024. He made concessions by forcing Foden and Bellingham into the team, cramping Harry Kane’s game as a result.

It is hard to see the current manager repeating that if it hurts the team harmony. There is room for a single playmaker, with quick attackers on the wings. Clear roles is beneficial. Bellingham is selected as a central attacker. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, selected for the first time, is a central midfielder and the returning Adam Wharton will vie with Elliot Anderson as a No 6. There will also be no wide role for the City star, who must play central. The coach wants him close to the striker. “It does not make sense to tell Foden: ‘We want you on the pitch but no spot exists in your preferred role, could you fill in at the left side? Or the other flank?’” he said. “Phil is to feature in the No 9-10ish position, in the middle of the pitch. I have this vision regarding him for a long time. In my view it matches his abilities the most.”

He agreed there are times when Foden has appeared uncomfortable in an England shirt. “One senses as if, ‘Does he like it?’ And a player like him who has such natural delight to play football, then clearly something is not right, be it the position, the environment, I don’t know.

“In my opinion he is additionally accustomed to playing for his club in a certain structure, with a defined role. I think he benefits greatly from clear instructions. What is my position? Where exactly am I to receive the ball? Where am I supposed to push the tempo? What are my to defensive duties?”

Tuchel discussed one star making runs for tap-ins and the other scoring strikes from outside the box. He said he has a longlist of many candidates. Several players, others, James Trafford and the midfielder have dropped out. A new face is recognized for his fine form for Manchester City at left-back. Intrigue abounds.

The omission of Ollie Watkins means there is no direct replacement for Kane in this squad. Interestingly, Tuchel hinted at deploying Foden as a deep-lying striker against Serbia or Albania. Anthony Gordon, the United forward, Bellingham and Jarrod Bowen are other options should he be unavailable. Since the place is booked, this is an opportunity for trying new things.

At the same time, it is also a moment to foster Kane’s relationship with his teammate going. It is remarkable that one must look back to Bellingham assisting Kane to score in a friendly win against the Scots in over a year ago to find the one and only time in many appearances for the national team when the pair linked up for a score. The coach will be aware that the two stars only passed to each other once during the team's ties with one opponent and another at the European Championship. Their partnership is lacking.

“This is where at some point it falls to the duty of the players,” Tuchel stated. He does not shy away to deliver home truths. There is still a feeling of Bellingham having to prove himself. He cannot even be guaranteed to start versus Serbia and Albania. Tuchel wants Bellingham onside but he will be monitoring him closely. Set aside the ego outside. Doing so could turn a very strong squad into an even better one.
