Murakami will become the fourth player from Japan to represent the White Sox, following pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu was a manager for Murakami back in Japan.
Career Highlights
Murakami, a left-handed hitter who turns 26 on February 2nd, bolsters a young lineup in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are coming off a difficult season, placing last in the division but representing a significant improvement from the year before campaign.
The winner of back-to-back Most Valuable Player honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami is famous for a record-breaking 2022 season where he hit 56 home runs, eclipsing the single-season record for a player in Japan formerly held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That feat also made him the most youthful hitter ever to secure Japan's coveted Triple Crown.
His 2023 season was shortened to a partial schedule due to an muscle issue. Despite recording often, he still managed .273 with 22 homers and 47 driven in.
Over his eight-year tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has accumulated a .270 career batting average with 246 homers, 647 RBI, and 977 Ks in 892 games. He started playing mainly at first, he has since transitioned to the hot corner.
Global Stage Success
Murakami's big-game performance were on global view during the 2023 World Baseball Classic. In the semi-final against Mexico, he drove in a victory-sealing double that scored Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a dramatic one-run win. The following day in the title match against the Team USA, he hit a tying home run in the second inning, setting the stage for Japan's eventual championship win.
The power hitter is set to be unveiled at a media availability on Monday.
