The Reze Arc Movie Leads American Cinema Earnings in Debut Weekend

Did Sony achieved another hit? Coming after the box office performance of the hit anime Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which earned over $600 million worldwide, the latest Chainsaw Man film has surpassed the $100 million mark worldwide, hitting a international earnings of over $108 million this weekend. This movie outperformed the thriller Black Phone 2 ($12.9M) in its second week in movie houses, as well as the film Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere with Jeremy Allen White ($9 million).

Strong Domestic and Worldwide Performance

Helmed by director Tatsuya Yoshihara, the feature is a direct continuation of the initial season of Chainsaw Man. It brought in over $18 million domestically after a robust $5.2M Saturday box office and $4.5 million Sunday take. Overseas, the animated by MAPPA film earned nearly $15 million across 46 global regions, resulting in a global sum of $60.4M under Sony ($43.1 million overseas, $18.2M stateside). Official totals are still pending from Sony its final earnings figure.

Benchmarks to Previous Anime Hits

Promotional firm White Box Entertainment had earlier commented, drawing parallels between the film’s projected performance to the anime hit Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which grossed thirty-four million dollars in the domestic market in 2022 and started with a similar eighteen million dollars in the U.S.. This movie's first weekend matches that benchmark, while its $108 million global gross currently tracks a bit short of that movie's $166.6 million total earnings. Although it’s unlikely this Chainsaw Man film will match the numbers of smash success the record-breaking Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, nonetheless, it is a major victory for the studio.

Marketing Efforts Boost Box Office Dominance

Sony and its subsidiary the anime streaming service Crunchyroll have effectively leveraged community involvement to drive their dominance at the cinema for anime films. The Reze Arc promotional efforts launched at Anime Expo Los Angeles in July with a MAPPA presentation, exclusive activations, and photo opportunities with Pochita, and later included a notable appearance at NYCC featuring behind-the-scenes footage, lotteries for fans, and more MAPPA sessions. Additionally, there was an exclusive fan screening for moviegoers and popular figures too after the concluding day of the convention.

Looking Ahead

2025 is a significant period for animated films, and for Sony, which has another anime film releasing in the coming months in Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in late this year.
