The Divinity Developer Clarifies Its Implementation of Generative AI for Upcoming Divinity
The team behind popular titles like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin just teased its next major project, creating a wave of anticipation within the gaming community. However, subsequent comments from the studio's figurehead have added a new dimension to the narrative, addressing the studio's approach toward machine learning.
AI as a Creative Assistant, Not a Substitute
In a latest clarification, Larian's director outlined that the developer is utilizing machine learning for specific supporting purposes. These include developing PowerPoint slides, generating early-stage visual ideas, and creating draft copy.
Importantly, Vincke made clear that the end material in the game will be created entirely by actual artists. "We are creating all the content manually," he said.
We are continuously growing our roster of writers and are busily putting together writing teams.
Since this area is being specifically mentioned — we presently have twenty-three artistic staff and have job openings for additional talent.
Everything we do is additive and designed to enabling creatives to spend greater focus on making content.
Any AI system implemented properly is additive to a creative team process, never a stand-in for their skill.
Addressing Concerns and Clarifying the Vision
The revelation of AI usage originally sparked unease among portions of the player base. In response, Vincke offered further elaboration on online platforms.
"Our team utilizes machine learning to gather inspiration, just like we use Google and physical media," he explained. "During the initial brainstorming phase we use it as a simple sketch for layout which we then substitute with authentic concept art."
He added, "We've hired artists for their creative vision, not for their willingness to follow what a algorithm proposes."
Three Pillars of Practical Application
Vincke had earlier detailed the company's focused strategy to machine learning, grouping its use into key functions:
- Streamlining Repetitive Work: This includes motion capture cleaning, voice editing, and Larian-specific work like adapting animations for different models.
- Fast-Tracked Experimentation: Using tools to quickly build basic models of gameplay ideas to experiment with concepts prior to expensive implementation.
- Experimental Frontiers: Investigating how machine learning could one day enhance innovative player agency, especially in managing dynamic reactions in a vast role-playing world.
He explicitly noted that central narrative disciplines — including writing — are are in no way departments where the company is replacing creative involvement. On the contrary, Larian is actively hiring in these exact roles.
"Our studio is not releasing a game with AI-generated content, nor considering cutting teams to swap them out with artificial intelligence," Vincke concluded.
