The Devastating Transformation Just One Year Has Brought in the United States

Twelve months back, the environment was completely distinct. Before the American presidential vote, thoughtful citizens could recognize America's deep flaws – its injustices and imbalance – however they continued to identify it as the United States. A democracy. A place where the rule of law held significance. A state led by a respectable and decent public servant, even with his advanced age and increasing frailty.

These days, this autumn, numerous citizens barely recognize the country we inhabit. Persons alleged as illegal immigrants are rounded up and shoved into transport, occasionally refused legal rights. The eastern section of the presidential residence – is undergoing demolition for a grotesque dance hall. The leader is persecuting his adversaries or perceived antagonists and insisting the justice department transfer an enormous amount of taxpayer money. Armed military personnel are being sent into American cities with deceptive justifications. The defense headquarters, rebranded the Defense Ministry, has – in effect – liberated itself of routine media oversight as it spends what could amount to close to a trillion USD from citizen taxes. Colleges, law firms, journalism organizations are submitting under the president’s threats, and rich magnates are regarded as aristocracy.

“The United States, shortly prior to its quarter-millennium anniversary as the globe's top democratic nation, has fallen over the edge into autocracy and fascism,” Garrett Graff, commented recently. “Ultimately, swifter than I believed likely, it did happen here.”

One awakes with fresh terrors. It is difficult to grasp – and agonizing to acknowledge – how deeply lost we have become, and the rapid pace with which it has happened.

Yet, we understand that the president was legitimately chosen. Despite his highly troubling previous administration and even after the alerts linked to the awareness of the conservative plan – even after Trump himself said publicly he would act as an autocrat only on the first day – enough Americans selected him rather than Kamala Harris.

Frightening as the present situation may be, it’s even scarier to realize that we’re only several months into this presidential term. How will three more years of this deterioration find us? And suppose that period becomes something even longer, since there is no one to restrain this president from deciding that a third term is essential, possibly for security concerns?

Admittedly, not everything is hopeless. There will be legislative votes the coming year which might create a new governmental control, in case Democrats retake either chamber of parliament. There are elected officials who are trying to apply some accountability, such as representatives that are launching an investigation concerning the try to money grab from the justice department.

And a presidential election in the next cycle could begin us down the road toward restoration exactly as the previous vote put us on this regrettable path.

We see countless citizens protesting in public spaces across municipalities, similar to recent in the past days in the No Kings rallies.

A former official, wrote recently that “the dormant powerhouse of the nation is rising”, exactly as before after the Communist witch-hunt era in that decade or amid the sixties activism or throughout the Nixon controversy.

In those instances, the listing ship ultimately corrected itself.

He claims he knows the signals of that resurgence and notices it unfolding at present. As support, he points to the widespread marches, the broad, multi-faction opposition to a broadcaster's firing and the near-unanimous defiance by media to sign the defense department’s demands they solely cover authorized information.

“The slumbering entity always remains dormant before certain corruption grows too toxic, a particular deed so contemptuous of societal benefit, specific cruelty so disruptive, that he is forced but to awaken.”

It's a hopeful perspective, and I appreciate the author's seasoned opinion. Maybe he’ll prove to be right.

At the same time, the major inquiries remain: can America return to normalcy? Can it reclaim its standing globally and its commitment to legal principles?

Or should we recognize that the national endeavor worked for a while, and then – swiftly, totally – ended?

My pessimistic brain suggests that the second option is correct; that everything could be gone. My hopeful heart, however, advises me that we need to strive, in whatever ways available.

In my case, as an observer of the press, that’s about encouraging reporters to commit, more completely, to their duty of holding power to account. For different individuals, it might involve working on congressional campaigns, or coordinating protests, or discovering methods to protect electoral access.

Under twelve months back, we were in an alternate reality. Twelve months later? Or three years from now? The fact is, we are uncertain. Our sole course is to strive to not give up.
