Three police officers were killed and no fewer than 15 others sustained injuries in a seemingly intentional detonation from gas at a rural property in Italy's north.

How It Happened

The blast took place as officers and emergency crews entered the property in the vicinity of the Verona region to execute an eviction order for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.

All three deceased individuals belonged to the Carabinieri military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

Two individuals got detained at the location and another man who ran away subsequent to the blast was found soon after. All three have been taken to hospital.

The blast could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the location showed the property turned into a heap of debris.

“We are in a period of mourning,” commented the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who added that attempts had been made to evict the brother and sister trio in the past.

Financial Context

The leader of the Veneto region, the regional head, stated the property was under an court order due to unpaid amounts accumulated by the property owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to talk with the family members who had secured themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe one of the residents set off the blast.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” provincial police commander Commander Papagno stated to reporters.

A gas canister had been ignited, and the explosion directly hit our members,” he added.

Petrol bombs were also discovered at the residence, the minister said.

Casualties and Damage

The wounded by the explosion included eleven more officers of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a emergency responder.

As stated by the prosecuting attorney, the property was in a poor condition and had was without power.

The official was convinced the detonation had taken place on a floor above the entrance and stated to journalists it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Moments before the blast, he revealed officers had “heard a whistle, presumably the propane tanks being opened”.

Community Reaction

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants stated to Italian media, noting that the family members had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than vacate the property.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Defence Minister Minister Crosetto united with other elected representatives in honoring the three officers who had died in the line of duty.
